The medieval village of Ringstead was rumored to have been burnt to the ground by French Pirates, the men killed and the women and children taken away. However, it more likely that the village was simply deserted shortly after the arrival of the Black Death in Weymouth, in1348. The offshore reef here provides a fair weather anchorage for small boats.
