The offshore ledge here wasn’t enough to protect the beach from being decimated during the winter storms of 1989/1990. Since then a stone groyne has been installed and the beach levels have been built up with gravel from inland quarries. It is hoped these efforts will help prevent the sea breaking through and eroding the soft Kimmeridge Clay behind.

The Limestone reef a short distance offshore from the beach at Ringstead dries out at low tide. A short swim across to it will be rewarded with a different kind of rock pooling experience, one where you end up getting wet first!
